A former photographer, I bring to the field an artist’s love of pictures with a scholar’s understanding of their importance in everyday life. I was named "one of the 100 most important people in photography" by American Photo magazine, and am photographs expert on the Emmy-nominated television program Antiques Roadshow.  A New York-based aucctioneer I am vice president and director of photographs at Swann Auction Galleries, in New York.

The author of four books, including Pop Photographica, Photography's Objects In Everyday Life 1842-1969 (Toronto, Canada: Art Gallery of Ontario, 2003); the recently published Premiere Nudes, Albert Arthur Allen (Santa Fe: Twin Palms Publishers, 2001); Lewis Hine In Europe, The "Lost" Photographs (New York: Abbeville Press, 1988); and Photo Story, Selected Letters and Photographs of Lewis W. Hine (Washington, D. C. and London: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1992), I also curate exhibitions devoted to 19th & 20th-century photography.

I have conducted seminars about collecting photographs at Photo Los Angeles, Photo San Francisco, Photo Santa Fe, the International Center of Photography, Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, the New School, and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, and have lectured about social documentary photography at Columbia University, Baruch College, the New School, the School of Visual Arts, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Albright College.  I have participated in New York University’s Appraisal Studies Program since 1996.

Profiled in Cigar Aficionado (January 2002) and in Traditional Home (October 2001), I'm a member of the Authors Guild, Appraisers Association of America, ArtTable, and am on the Board of Advisers for Binghamton University Art Committee, Fifty Crows Foundation (San Francisco), and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. My references include Who's Who of American Woman, International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women, and Fred and Gloria McDarrah’s The Photography Encyclopedia (New York, 1999).

An educator, I was advisor to the M. F. A. program at the School of Visual Arts, in 1998, and Adjunct Professor of history at the New York University’s Graduate School, from 1990-91.  An authority on the photography marketplace I have been quoted in The Wall Street Journal; The New York Times; The New York Observer; Photo District News; The Palm Beach Post; Art News; Art Newspaper; Financial Times; Los Angeles Times; Art & Auction; U. S. News and World Report; Popular Photography; and New York Magazine. My fine art photographs are in prominent public and private collections.
